When depression has its hold on you, functioning properly seems nearly impossible—even through everyday routines. It’s a constant challenge for adults and teens alike and, unfortunately, it doesn’t just go away on its own.
Being a teenager is hard enough as it is—major issues galore! You have a ton of stress to deal with, sometimes on a daily basis, and it’s fairly common for teens to feel like there’s no one that they can talk to. Enter the risk of depression. When teens feel like they’re going through this world alone, and facing challenges on their own, it can lead to deep depression.
What are the side effects of teens with depression? Keep an eye out and do your best to catch whatever changes your teenager may be experiencing. How is he or she eating or sleeping? If you notice anything out of the ordinary, there may be a problem. Gaining and losing weight is another tell-tale sign of depression for many teenagers. Have you noticed him or her skipping school? How are their grades? If something’s amiss, you owe it to yourself and your loved one to address the issue immediately.
It’s not always easy to deal with the problem, however, when many teens withdraw from their family and friends. It often begins with a sudden lack of interest in the things that they used to enjoy. In fact, this is a major sign to look out for. You may find that others will suddenly overreact to things that they normally wouldn’t; simple problems that would never have bothered them before. Unfortunately, you should also be on the lookout for abuse of things like alcohol, drugs, and sex. Left untreated, these problems can and do lead to thoughts of suicide.
So, what can be done about depression and teens? Well, there’s always counseling. It always helps for a teen to get their feelings out in the open. What’s great about going to a counselor is that he or she can help them understand their emotions, and also get their lives back on track. There are ways to rid yourself of the most negative feelings, and counseling will show your teen the way. Of course, there are times when simply talking about a problem isn’t enough and their depression may require medication.
Treating depression with medication is nothing to be ashamed of. Help a teenager understand that it’s the only way to feel better and be happy again, and that it doesn’t matter what anyone thinks. After all, we all have problems and we all want to be happy in life, right? Whatever happens, make sure that you’re attending to your teen’s depression and seeking help as soon as possible.

How to heal depression and men

Only thirty-five percent! Chalk it up to the male ego. You see, image and reputation is very important to a man, and he’ll do anything (including denial) just to appear strong and stable but the truth is…men can and do suffer from depression. And you know what? Admitting that you are in a depression doesn’t make you less of a man.
Why try to hide your depression when you can proactively find a solution to it? Trying to cover it up can only lead to more problems. And there are countless ways that men try to cover up their depression, such as drug-use, alcohol, sex, work, and a myriad more. It’s like they’re trying to create a new problem that will take the place of the one they’re avoiding and, in the end, it only makes them lonelier and more depressed.
So what’s the difference between men and women when it comes to depression? Well, men will do their best to avoid treatment (thus admitting “weakness”) and women are the ones who hate to admit that they have an issue at all. It’s important to remember, no matter which group you’re in…if you have friends and family around you who are willing to help you, making it through your troubles won’t be impossible. There is hope…you just need to ask for it.
It’s amazing how strong feelings of shame and fear can affect men. Often times it causes them to get really good at hiding their depression. It’s an important distinction between men and women because men really do want to be left alone, and it’s not a subtle way of reaching out. In fact, if you ask many of the people close to men who’ve committed suicide they will tell you: “I had no idea that he was in that kind of pain.” Yes, men are that good at hiding their feelings. The sad truth is that depression is a quiet, painful battle that too many men suffer through alone.
Can you recognize the tell-tale signs? Start by examining their behavior. If the man you’re looking at is going through a lot of changes, a red flag should go up. For example, changes in sleep patterns are common. Is he oversleeping? Or, is getting sleep difficult? Can you tell if he’s tense or stressed? Angry? Remember, he could be doing his best to battle depression (alone) so you’ll want to proceed with caution; slowly.
Try your best not to push him. Getting help must be a decision that he makes as opposed to you making it for him. Otherwise, you may find yourself on the receiving end of anger. Believe me, the last thing you want is to get hurt as a result of trying to help, even if he didn’t mean to. Unpredictability is common when men feel the need to hide their depression, and he’s often willing to do anything to keep it hidden.
If you learn nothing else, take it to heart that getting treatment is a decision that he has to make on his own. Just be there for him; tell him that you’re concerned. Being a good listener is far more important in these situations than doing a lot of talking. In other words, don’t assume that you can just “talk through” the problem. It may be a lot deeper that mere words can handle. You’ll also do well to remind him that you love and care about him often. It’s one of the greatest ways to be supportive. If you can make him feel like you’re both going through it together, then he’ll appreciate the fact that he’s not alone.

Geriatric depression and other illnesses often go hand-in-hand

As a result, the health of a geriatric patient can suffer in other ways. This is one of the unfortunate side effects. But it works both ways. Have you ever noticed how elderly people (or people of any age) who are diagnosed with a serious illness suddenly become depressed? Sometimes the idea of going through the suffering that accompanies their illness is just too much to handle. It’s understandable but depression will only make that illness (and life, in general) a lot harder. If you can, get help before either side effect has its way.
Depression has certain illness associated with it. Do you know what they are? Bipolar disorder, and other mental disorders are among them. Many people suffer a great loss because of depression-caused sickness. In fact, there are a ton of disorders that have been known to cause cancer, diabetes, and heart disease.
The way it works its destruction is that many people experience shock when they first learn about their illness. Once they’ve had a little time to let it sink in, that shock turns to extreme depression. It can affect all those people who have AIDS, cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and diabetes. No one is completely immune. However, it is possible to beat the depression with the proper treatment. Success comes from learning ways to control it. After that, you’ll find that your other health-related issues can improve by leaps and bounds.
It’s sad but true that the list of disorders that co-exist with depression is long. Among the most common is bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, those who experience bipolar disorder are two-times as likely to commit suicide.
In cases like these, treatment is of the utmost importance for both the depression and the bipolar disorder. Leaving it untreated can result in the person ending his or her own life. With those kinds of odds, seeking help is imperative. Not only that…if you ignore the problem these folks become so unreliable and unstable that they may even harm others.
Even after medical attention, people who are suffering with geriatric depression and bipolar disorder need to be watched carefully. You’ll find that they’re still a threat to themselves and others. Whatever you do, make sure that you speak with a doctor about the right way to care for your loved one, and get as much advice as you can about danger signs and what to do with them. Safety comes first when these two conditions are together.

Never take chances with medication for depression and suicide

For many out there who are suffering, depression can mean death. And that’s the last you want (of course). So, it’s beyond important to respect how serious depression is for you or someone you care about.
It should come as no surprise that suicide is one of the most severe results of depression. At the root of it is a chemical imbalance that can cause a person to spiral out of control at an alarming rate. Mood swings…diet, sleeping patterns…they can all go out of whack. You’ll know because you will notice that the person who’s suffering is not enjoying life and, as a byproduct, may be making your life difficult too. Severe depression is no laughing matter. Those who are diagnosed with it have an uphill battle ahead of them.
When you’re depressed you feel like you’ve lost all of your energy; like you can’t bear to do anything at times. Without energy, it’s like you have no reason to go on anymore. Feeling like you have no hope and no way to solve the situation is common while going through the trauma of depression. It’s sad to say but it often gets to the point where people who are depressed feel like ending their life is their only escape from the hopelessness in their head.
Not reaching out for help is the biggest problem. People who commit suicide are the ones who failed to tap the shoulder of a friend or family member. They ran out of ideas. For some reason, they avoid letting others know that they’re suffering and are left to overcome personal demons on their own. In some cases, diagnoses are incorrect and many people who did seek help find themselves helpless in the end. Unfortunatley, this leads the sufferer to take matters into his or her hands. At that point, those who survived another’s suicide are left wondering what really happened.
Getting help, however, can prevent someone from ending their life. Being treated in the correct way is key to a person who is dealing with their depression problem. Offer support, and help them get the help that they need. Remember, it’s not easy dealing with day-to-day issues when you’re depressed. Help to make sure that the person in pain is not on their own. Who knows…by simply leading a person with depression to the proper medication and treatment, you could be saving their life.

Are you experiencing a personal problem? Maybe you’re struggling with your family, or you’re in a strained personal relationship. If there’s a specific problem that’s causing you to experience stress, you must find an effective way to overcome it. How much do you know about Anxiety And Depression?

It’s a serious condition where the brain’s neurotransmitters go off balance and the result is a change in mood. Often times people think that it’s something that’s easy to snap out of but depression is not that simple. When a person is truly depressed, medical treatment is often the only way to get themselves out of it. Only a doctor can help you when you have a chemical imbalance.
Medication is available to help you feel better about yourself. But if you have severe depression, things can be a little more complicated than that. There are people who may end up catatonic, meaning they can’t even blink! Others show signs of physical illness where, for no reason, you may feel like there’s something seriously wrong with your body. Depression affects everyone differently.
In extreme case of depression, people cannot live life normally and are checked into a hospital for medical attention. Becoming physically sick is too serious a thing not to. As a result, you’re not only placed on medication but also required to attend therapy.
Sometimes mixing medication and therapy isn’t the only answer. Sure, it can keep depression at bay but it can also hide the true causes of your depression. When you’re suffering from manic depression, it’s important that you are monitored daily so that you do not harm yourself or others. If you notice that someone’s behavior is changing and seems depressed, you should tell someone whom you think can help. We all go experience tough times in life and friends and family are often the best for seeing our way through to the good times.
Sadness isn’t the only thing that people who are depression suffer from. They can become lost. In the end, they may feel like they’ve lost themselves and all meaning in their lives. Suddenly, the things that used to make them happy no longer keep them interested, and they find themselves going through long periods of unhappiness. For others, they also become very difficult to be around. Depressed people can become violent and extremely angry.
You may also find that people who are depressed carry themselves in a different way. Pay close attention and you’ll sometimse see them moving and walking slower, even to the point of becoming hunched over. They may express thoughts of hopelessness and suicide, however, it’s important to note that not all depressions have to be suicidal.
Bottom line is, if you know someone who is doing through anxiety and depression, please keep a close eye on them. Try to make a connection with them. That way, you’ll be more likely to convince them that they need help, and also show them the steps needed in order to get that help.
